Hue family

Blue HEX colors.

Blue spans OKLCH hue angles from 245° to below 275°. Its representatives include navy and saturated primary blues alongside quieter steel, royal, sky, and pale blue references.

Family definition

How Hue Codex classifies blue colors.

A chromatic color belongs to the Hue Codex blue family when its OKLCH hue is at least 245° and below 275°. The references span navy, primary-looking, royal, steel, and pale blues at different lightness levels.

Boundary with neighboring families

Cyan-blue ends at 245°, and violet begins at 275°. Values near the lower edge look more cyan-leaning, while those near the upper edge can begin to look violet-leaning.

Name versus measurement

CSS Blue is exactly #0000FF and has an OKLCH hue of 264.05°, placing it inside this family. CSS Navy and RoyalBlue also belong here, while several sky-named colors fall in cyan-blue.

Dark, middle, and light reference points

These fixed examples mark the ordered set by OKLCH lightness. They are orientation points, not claims that a color is suitable for a particular text, interface, or brand role.

Blue family reference points ordered by OKLCH lightness
Range position Color reference HEX OKLCH L
Dark end Muted Very Dark Blue #000008 6.1%
Middle reference Vivid Mid-light Blue #1052CE 48.4%
Light end Muted Very Light Blue #DEEFFF 94.4%

Practical workflow

Use blue references in three steps.

A family is a starting point for exploration. Make final decisions with the exact color value and the context where it will be used.

  1. Choose an exact HEX value. Open a reference above to review its measured formats, related colors, role guidance, and copy-ready CSS tokens.
  2. Check formats and contrast. Use the Color Converter, then verify the intended foreground and background in the Contrast Checker. A family label alone does not establish accessibility.
  3. Build and document the system. Create related candidates with the Palette Generator and review the reference-data methodology when you need the classification rules and limitations.

Common questions

Blue color family questions.

Is every CSS color with “blue” in its name in this family?
No. The name is not the classifier. SkyBlue and LightBlue, for example, are measured in the neighboring cyan-blue interval.
Why can navy and bright blue share one family?
They can share the same hue interval while differing greatly in lightness and chroma. The family groups hue; it does not claim that the colors serve the same design role.
